LIPOR (Portugal)

About Us

LIPOR—Municipalities Association for Sustainable Waste Management of Greater Porto—was founded in 1982 and brings together eight municipalities of the Greater Porto Area: Espinho, Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Porto, Póvoa de Varzim, Valongo, and Vila do Conde.

Serving around 1 million inhabitants, LIPOR manages, recovers, and treats approximately 500,000 tonnes of municipal waste each year. Beyond operational excellence, LIPOR actively engages with citizens through awareness and education campaigns, promoting responsible waste management and sustainable behaviour across the region.

Our Expertise

LIPOR is driven by modern, integrated waste management concepts focused on minimising landfill disposal and maximising resource recovery. Its strategy is built on a comprehensive system that includes:

  • Multimaterial recovery
  • Organic recovery
  • Energy recovery
  • A landfill facility supporting residual waste and treatment by-products.

Guided by the principles of the Circular Economy, LIPOR continuously expands its portfolio of projects and services. By integrating the environmental, economic, and social pillars of sustainable development, LIPOR transforms daily waste management into long-term value for communities and the environment.
